Elemental Magic Spells

Many people who practice witchcraft like to use elemental magic spells, as it is a very natural form of magic. It's also much easier to learn (and remember) the basic qualities and attributes of 4 elements rather than learn hundreds of other correspondences for herbs, stones or oils. Though it may be simpler than some other spells, elemental magic spells can still be powerful.

Fire
Next up for elemental magic spells is fire. Candle spells are the most popular kind of witchcraft spell, and are a good example of using fire. Fire should be used for spells involving passion, energy, strength, creativity and anger. Items for fire include candles (obviously) as well as volcanic glass, and the athame (though some traditions have they athame associated with air). Fire spells usually involve candles, but not always.

Casting fire spells is one of the most common ways of harnessing the elements, usually with candles. Fire is a powerful element that represents all kinds of passion, energy, ego, willpower, creativity, strength and even anger. Though you can cast spells specifically for these things, fire is usually introduced to bring more energy to your purpose, even if that purpose is not fire-related on its own. Make sense?
These are the kinds of things you can use in your spellwork to bring in some of that fire energy:
  • Altar tools like an athame or candles
  • Stones such as carnelian, garnet, bloodstone
  • Oils and herbs like cedar, cinnamon, basil and rosemary

As I mentioned, most fire spells include candles as a way of using the element

You can also burn things, though this isn't always practical. Having a fire-proof cauldron can help if you want to use more fire.

Joyful Candle Spell
Use the power of fire to bring a little more joy into your life. Supplies for this spell:

• 3 orange candles

• Marjoram and rosemary

• Cedar oil

Anoint the candles with cedar oil, and light them. Sprinkle some of the herbs around the bases of the candles and focus on the flames. Feel the heat of the fire fill up your soul. Repeat the following:

Happiness and joy come into my life
Away with anger, stress and strife
I am happy, I am free
No more negativity

ass your hands through the warmth of the flames (preferably without burning yourself). Leave the candles to burn down on their own.

Flames Within

Give yourself a magickal perk-up and shine with the energy of fire. Get your spell stuff together

• Red candle
• Glass of red wine
• Cinnamon (powdered)

You can use non-alcoholic wine or even juice if you prefer, but the spell is stronger if you use the real stuff. Pour your wine into a nice glass, and add a small sprinkle of cinnamon to it. Dip your finger into the wine and give it a little stir.

Run your wet fingertip around the rim of the glass until you hear a ringing tone. Watch the candle flame and visualize it shining out from within yourself.

Drink the glass of wine and feel its warmth flow through you. Place the empty glass next to the candle, and let it burn down.

Water
And lastly we come to water. Water energies are often used in spells for love, fertility, friendship, healing and sleep. But spells don't often call for actual water. Crystals like aquamarine and moonstone make great "water" additions, as do herbs like lilac. A chalice is the usual altar tool to represent the element of water. If you do use water in your water spells, try to use naturally collected rainwater. For a different sort of magick, use your water in ice spells instead.

Water Spells

The elemental energy in water spells is used for magick involving love, friendship, mystery, psychic abilities, healing, dreams and sleep. You'll want to add some water elements for any magick that has to do with your emotions or the astral world beyond.

So if you're looking to cast a water spell, here are some of the things you could use:
Stones like moonstone, aquamarine, jade or malachite
Altar tools like a chalice or cup
Oils and herbs such as valerian, jasmine or gardenia

Though drinking is a common part of water magick, ritual baths are another great way to bring in some water energy to your spells.

New Moon Psychic Bath

This relaxing bath will help bring out your natural psychic abilities, and connect with the energies of the moon. Try to perform this spell during the phase of the new moon if you can. You need:

• 1 cup coarse sea salt
• 1/2 cup baking soda
• 1/4 cup vervain
• 1/4 cup jasmine flowers
• 7 drops cypress oil

In a bowl, mix together everything but the oil. Pour it into a tub full of hot bathwater, then add the drops of oil to the bath too. You can split the mixture in half for 2 baths if you want, just keep the oil separate.

Get in the tub, and just soak. Careful getting in though, the sea salt will be a bit rough under foot. Let your thoughts float and open up your mind to new ideas and experiences. Stay in the bath until the water gets cold.

Peaceful Dreams Spell

This spell can help promote a more restful sleep and pleasant dreams. An ideal magickal option if you're under stress and can't sleep. This is what you need:

• 1 tsp coarse salt
• 1/2 oz rosemary
• 1 oz rose petals
• 1 oz valerian
• 3 pieces of moonstone
• Glass bowl

Before bed, fill the bowl with water then add the salt and herbs. Stir it around gently, and repeat the following:

Bring me quiet
Bring me peace
Ease my dreams
Nightmares cease

Air

First off, we have the element of air. The qualities that air represents include: ideas, inspiration, creativity, intelligence, travel, freedom, new beginnings and mental clarity. If you want a spell for any of these ideas, you should incorporate air into your magick. Items like feathers, bells, incense and quartz all have air attributes. Keep reading for more air spells.

Air Spells

So when would you want to cast air spells? The elemental realm of air rules over things of the mind, such as memory, intelligence, creativity and new ideas.

Whenever you want to do magick for travel, inspiration, clear thoughts, happiness or freedom, you should make sure you add some aspects of air to your spells. The following items are great for air spells:
Altar items like bells, feathers, incense and ornamental fans
Stones like clear quartz, amethyst, and fluorite
Herbs and oils of lavender, mint, pine and meadowsweet

If you are creating your own spells for air, try to use these materials. Your spells should include actions like writing and speaking aloud, inhaling scents, and ringing bells or chimes.

Bring Travel Spell

Want to get out there and see the world? This is an easy spell to help bring more travel opportunities into your life. It's a great example of an air spell. You will need:

• A small hand fan
• Dish of fresh mint
• A small light feather

The fan should be the kind you wave, not a battery-operated gizmo. And the feather should be small and light, not a big turkey feather. I hope that's all nice and clear now. Lean over the dish of mint, and breathe in the smell. Visualize yourself in different places, seeing different landscapes.

Toss the little feather in the air, and use the fan to blow it around the room. Try to keep it airborne as you see the winds of chance also moving you to new places in the near future.

Let the feather land in the mint, then take a few more breaths of the minty aroma. Each morning take a deep breath of it again, and picture yourself seeing new sights.

Invoke Your Muse

Get your creativity flowing with a little magick. Your supplies for this spell are:

• Dried lavender flowers
• Lavender oil
• Something to symbolize your art or craft

By "art or craft", I mean whatever medium you work in that you need creativity. Painting, writing, sculpture or even your regular day job. You need some kind of object that represents where you want your creativity to shine through.

Set the item on your altar, and rub a little lavender oil on it. Sprinkle a handful of lavender blossoms over it while you repeat the following words aloud:

Muse of art
Muse of sound
Muse of thought
Gather 'round
I ask for power
For shining light
Creativity
In this rite

Leave the item on your altar until you've found that new burst of creative energy.

Earth
Next is earth. This is an element that stands for grounding, all forms of nature, money and prosperity, growth, rules and responsibility. If you want to represent earth on your altar, you can use a pentacle, stones, or a bowl of earth or rock salt. For earth spells, crystals and herbs are often used since they are natural items directly from the earth.

Earth Spells

Earth spells are best for material things like money, abundance and financial prosperity. Other areas that are ruled by elemental earth are fertility, home, grounding, nature and growth. Add the solid power of earth to your magick with these types of spell ingredients:
Altar tools such as bowls of salt, earth or a pentacle
Any stones, but particularly aventurine, jet or onyx
Oils and herbs like patchouli, mugwort, vetivert or cypress

Earth spells often include live plants, burying things in the earth and eating foods. If you're looking to add some earth energy, try to use these types of things in your spellwork.

Charm of the Oak

This spell is intended as a way to connect to the deep wisdom and knowledge embodied in the oak tree. It's a more spiritual and somewhat intangible spell than most others. All you need is:

• 4 acorns
• Small bag of brown fabric
• Patchouli oil
• A brown or green candle

Best if you can collect the acorns yourself. Anoint the candle and the acorns with oil, and light the candle. While you hold the acorns in your hands, repeat the following: Sacred oak
Blessed seed
Growth and wisdom
Mine indeed Visualize a mighty oak tree, and all the things it may have to teach you. Place the acorns in the bag, and leave it near the candle. Let the candle burn out on its own, and leave the bag somewhere where you will see it every day. Opportunities to gain new knowledge will soon present themselves.

Fertility Egg Spell

A little magick can help in your quest to become pregnant, but don't be foolish and ignore any possible medical issues. Your supplies for this earth spell are just:

• A raw egg
• A whole vanilla bean
• Pencil

Write these symbols on an egg. They're in Theban script, and read "ripe". Go outside and dig a hole in your yard, and bury the egg with the vanilla bean. Make sure it's deep enough that an animal won't dig it up. If you don't have a yard, use a large flower pot filled with earth.

This spell works best if you bury the egg during a waxing moon, though you don't necessarily have to do it at night. Each night afterwards though, you have to go outside and water the spot so your spell can "grow".
